After his horse passed away, Brooks was forced to borrow a friend's bicycle to commute. The experience of riding on the bicycle's solid wooden saddle was so uncomfortable that it inspired him to create a better solution. Using his expertise in leather goods, Brooks crafted the first leather cycling saddle- "a seat designed to be both durable and comfortable.
